Round Robin Schedule for 8 Teams (Free Template)
A ready-to-use 8-team round robin: 7 rounds, 28 games, the circle method, byes for 7 or 9 teams, tiebreakers and the field time you need.

Short answer: An 8-team round robin has 7 rounds of 4 games, 28 games in total. Every team plays every other team once, so each team plays 7 games. Use the template below: fix team 1 in place and rotate the others one step each round. Nobody sits out, and nobody plays the same opponent twice.

Round robin is the fairest format there is: every team meets every other team, and the standings are earned over many games. It is also the most expensive in field time. This post gives you a finished 8-team schedule, explains how it was built so you can make your own, and covers byes, tiebreakers and the slots you'll need. It's part of our guide to tournament formats and brackets.
Honest note: Play 2 Earn Sports does not generate round robin schedules. Our free bracket generator builds single-elimination knockouts only, which is useful after a round robin stage. For the round robin itself, use the template below.
The 8-team round robin template
Replace the numbers with your teams. If you've seeded them, put your top seed as team 1.
| Round | Game A | Game B | Game C | Game D |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 v 8 | 2 v 7 | 3 v 6 | 4 v 5 |
| 2 | 7 v 1 | 8 v 6 | 2 v 5 | 3 v 4 |
| 3 | 1 v 6 | 7 v 5 | 8 v 4 | 2 v 3 |
| 4 | 5 v 1 | 6 v 4 | 7 v 3 | 8 v 2 |
| 5 | 1 v 4 | 5 v 3 | 6 v 2 | 7 v 8 |
| 6 | 3 v 1 | 4 v 2 | 5 v 8 | 6 v 7 |
| 7 | 1 v 2 | 3 v 8 | 4 v 7 | 5 v 6 |
Check it yourself: each number appears exactly once per round, and each pair appears exactly once across the seven rounds. Team 1 alternates home and away, and the other teams get a near-even split.
Tip: putting 1 v 2 in the last round is deliberate. If your top seeds are the strongest teams, their game often decides the title, and families like a final-round decider.
How the template was built: the circle method
You can build a round robin for any even number of teams this way.
- Write the teams in two rows. Top row: 1, 2, 3, 4. Bottom row (reversed): 8, 7, 6, 5.
- Each column is a game: 1 v 8, 2 v 7, 3 v 6, 4 v 5.
- Keep team 1 fixed. Move every other team one place clockwise: the last team of the bottom row goes to the second spot on the top row.
- Read off the new columns. Repeat until you're back to the start: that's N − 1 rounds.
- Swap home and away in alternate rounds for team 1 so it doesn't host every game.
The method guarantees every pair meets once. It's how most round robin generators work under the hood.
How many games and slots you need
- Games: N × (N − 1) ÷ 2 = 8 × 7 ÷ 2 = 28.
- Games per team: N − 1 = 7.
- Games per round: N ÷ 2 = 4.
Slots are where the plan meets reality. With four fields, each round takes one time slot and you finish in seven slots. With two fields, each round takes two slots, so you need 14.
| Fields/courts | Time slots | With 60-min slots | With 90-min slots |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 7 | 7 hours | 10.5 hours |
| 2 | 14 | 14 hours | 21 hours |
| 1 | 28 | 28 hours | 42 hours |
Seven games in one day is too many for most youth players. For a weekend event, many organizers split 8 teams into two pools of four instead: 12 pool games, then semifinals and a final, 15 games in total, with each team playing at least 3. For a season or league, the full round robin works well as one round per week. See how many games in a tournament for every format's formula.
Odd numbers: 7 or 9 teams
Add a dummy team called BYE. Whoever is drawn against BYE rests that round.
- 7 teams: use the 8-team template with team 8 as BYE. You get 7 rounds of 3 games (21 games), and each team sits out once.
- 9 teams: build a 10-team circle with team 10 as BYE: 9 rounds of 4 games (36 games).
Byes are fair in round robin because every team gets exactly one. Tell teams their bye round in advance so they can plan travel and meals.
Tiebreakers: write them down first
Round robins produce ties in the standings. Publish your order before the first game. A common order:
- Points (for example, 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss; your sport may differ).
- Head-to-head result between the tied teams.
- Goal (or point) difference. Many youth events cap the margin counted per game; if yours does, publish the cap and check it against your governing body's rules.
- Goals (or points) allowed, fewest first.
- Fair-play or discipline record.
- Coin toss or penalty shootout, as your rules specify.
Capping the margin matters in youth sport. It removes the incentive to run up the score against a weaker team to win a tiebreak.
Double round robin
In leagues, teams often play each other twice, once at "home" and once "away". Run the template twice and flip the home team in the second half. That's 56 games and 14 rounds for 8 teams.
Using round robin with a knockout
Round robin results make excellent seeds. After the round robin, the top four can play semifinals (1 v 4, 2 v 3) and a final. Or take all eight into a quarterfinal knockout using the 8-team bracket template, which our bracket maker can draw for you. Learn more in how to seed a tournament bracket.
Common round robin mistakes
- Scheduling the strongest teams to meet in round 1. Save the likely decider for the last round so standings stay live all day.
- Forgetting rest. With two fields, some teams play two rounds in a row. Reorder the games within a round so no team plays consecutive slots.
- No tiebreak order published. Three-way ties are easy to hit in 8-team groups. Publish the order in the team package, not on the day.
- Unequal game lengths. If a weather delay shortens some games, apply the same change to every game in that round, or the standings stop being comparable.
- Late withdrawals. If a team leaves mid-event, decide in advance whether its results stand or are removed. Removing them for everyone is usually fairer.
Canadian notes
- Sanctioning: a round robin tournament is still a tournament. In Ontario soccer, apply through Ontario Soccer's CTMS; sanctioned events appear in its Tournament Directory. Other sports and provinces have their own process.
- Community leagues running a season-long round robin should check their provincial association's rules on game length and rest for each age group.
- Bilingual events: in Quebec, or for events near Ottawa–Gatineau, consider publishing the schedule in English and French.
In the US: check your state association's rules; the schedule itself works the same way.
