16-Team Bracket Template + One-Day Tournament Schedule
Printable 16-team bracket with seeding, plus a one-day, four-field schedule with rest between games and an optional consolation bracket.

Short answer: A 16-team single-elimination bracket has 4 rounds and 15 games (16 with a third-place game). Seed it so each first-round game adds up to 17: 1 v 16, 8 v 9, 5 v 12, 4 v 13 in the top half and 3 v 14, 6 v 11, 7 v 10, 2 v 15 in the bottom. With four fields and 75-minute slots, it fits in one day with rest between every game.

Sixteen teams is where a tournament starts to feel big, and where a bad schedule really hurts. This post gives you a printable 16-team bracket, a slot-by-slot one-day schedule with rest built in, and an optional consolation bracket so every team plays at least twice. It's part of our guide to tournament formats and brackets. To skip the drawing, our free bracket maker builds a 16-team bracket with no login.

Why this order?
If the favourites win, the quarterfinals are 1 v 8, 4 v 5, 3 v 6 and 2 v 7, the semifinals are 1 v 4 and 2 v 3, and the final is 1 v 2. Seeds 1 and 2 sit in opposite halves, so they can only meet in the final. It's the same pattern as the 8-team bracket, doubled. One-day schedule: 4 fields, 75-minute slots
This schedule assumes four fields (or courts, rinks or gyms) and 75-minute slots: for example, a 60-minute game plus a 15-minute changeover. Adjust the slot length to your sport and age group. The rule throughout: no team plays in two slots in a row.
| Slot | Start | Field 1 | Field 2 | Field 3 | Field 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 8:00 | G1: 1 v 16 | G2: 8 v 9 | G3: 5 v 12 | G4: 4 v 13 |
| 2 | 9:15 | G5: 3 v 14 | G6: 6 v 11 | G7: 7 v 10 | G8: 2 v 15 |
| 3 | 10:30 | G9: W1 v W2 | G10: W3 v W4 | (C) C1: L1 v L2 | (C) C2: L3 v L4 |
| 4 | 11:45 | G11: W5 v W6 | G12: W7 v W8 | (C) C3: L5 v L6 | (C) C4: L7 v L8 |
| 5 | 13:00 | Lunch and buffer for delays | |||
| 6 | 14:15 | G13: W9 v W10 | G14: W11 v W12 | (C) C5: WC1 v WC2 | (C) C6: WC3 v WC4 |
| 7 | 15:30 | Rest and buffer before finals | |||
| 8 | 16:45 | G15: Final | G16: Third place | (C) C7: Consolation final | — |
"L1" means the loser of game 1; "WC1" means the winner of consolation game C1. The day runs from 8:00 to about 17:45.
How the rest works
- Round-of-16 winners from slot 1 rest in slot 2 and play their quarterfinal in slot 3. Winners from slot 2 rest in slot 3 and play in slot 4.
- Both semifinals start together in slot 6, so neither side gets an easier path to the final.
- Slot 7 is a full rest before the final and third-place game, and a buffer if anything runs late.
Game counts
| Part | Games |
|---|---|
| Main bracket | 15 |
| Third-place game | 1 |
| Consolation bracket (optional) | 7 |
| Total | 23 |
With the consolation bracket, every team plays at least twice, which matters when families have driven a long way. Without it, eight teams go home after one game.
Fewer fields? Here's what changes
| Fields | Round of 16 takes | Realistic finish | Advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 2 slots | Same day, about 8 slots | Use the schedule above |
| 3 | 3 slots | Same day if games are short | Cut slot length or drop the consolation bracket |
| 2 | 4 slots | Long day or two days | Run the round of 16 on day one, the rest on day two |
| 1 | 8 slots | Two days or more | Consider an 8-team bracket per division instead |
Always count slots before you open registration. Formulas for every format are in how many games in a tournament.
Fewer than 16 teams: byes
With 9 to 15 teams, use this bracket and give byes to the top seeds. Byes = 16 minus your number of teams.
- 12 teams: 4 byes to seeds 1–4. Round-of-16 games actually played: 8 v 9, 5 v 12, 6 v 11, 7 v 10. Total: 11 games.
- 10 teams: 6 byes to seeds 1–6. Only 8 v 9 and 7 v 10 play in round one. Total: 9 games.
With byes, a top seed's first game is a quarterfinal. Schedule it so they aren't sitting around all morning.
Other one-day options for 16 teams
- Four pools of four + 8-team knockout gives every team at least three games, but needs 24 pool games plus 7 knockout games: 31 in all. That's usually a two-day event.
- Double elimination is 30 or 31 games. It rarely fits one day for long-game sports. Compare in single vs double elimination.
- Single elimination + consolation (the plan above) is the most realistic way to guarantee two games in one day.

Canadian and US notes
A 16-team youth event in Canada should normally be sanctioned by your provincial or territorial governing body, which connects it to that body's rules and insurance. In Ontario soccer, apply through Ontario Soccer's CTMS (Tournament Directory). In hockey, follow your branch's process, for example Hockey Eastern Ontario, and ask your rink how long ice resurfacing takes before you fix slot lengths. Check your governing body's rules on games per day for each age group before you promise a consolation bracket. In the US, the same checks go through your state association.
Budgeting? Referee assignments = games × officials per game. With the consolation bracket and one referee plus two assistants per game, that's 23 × 3 = 69 assignments. Get your association's fee schedule early. Our youth tournament checklist covers the rest.
