8-Team Bracket: Free Printable Template + How Seeding Works

Free printable 8-team bracket: 7 games, 3 rounds, standard seeding (1 v 8, 4 v 5, 3 v 6, 2 v 7), byes for 5 to 7 teams and a sample schedule.

Short answer: An 8-team single-elimination bracket has 3 rounds and 7 games: four quarterfinals, two semifinals and a final (8 games with a third-place game). Seed it 1 v 8 and 4 v 5 in the top half, 3 v 6 and 2 v 7 in the bottom half, so seeds 1 and 2 can only meet in the final. Print the template below or build it free online.

Eight teams is the most common bracket size in youth and amateur sport. It's big enough to feel like a real tournament and small enough to finish in half a day. This post gives you a printable 8-team bracket, explains how seeding works, and shows how to schedule it. It's part of our guide to tournament formats and brackets. Prefer not to draw it? Optional third-place game (G8): loser G5 v loser G6. Play it at the same time as the final on another field, so the semifinal losers get the same rest as the finalists.

The same bracket as a list

  • Quarterfinals: G1: 1 v 8 · G2: 4 v 5 · G3: 3 v 6 · G4: 2 v 7
  • Semifinals: G5: W1 v W2 · G6: W3 v W4
  • Final: G7: W5 v W6

How seeding works in an 8-team bracket

Seeding ranks teams from 1 (strongest) to 8 and places them so the best teams meet as late as possible. Two rules do all the work.

Rule 1: the seeds in each first-round game add up to 9

1 + 8, 2 + 7, 3 + 6, 4 + 5. The strongest team plays the weakest, the second-strongest plays the second-weakest, and so on.

Rule 2: seeds 1 and 2 go in opposite halves

Seed 1's quarter goes with the 4 v 5 game. Seed 2's goes with the 3 v 6 game. If the favourites win every game:

  • Semifinals: 1 v 4 and 2 v 3
  • Final: 1 v 2

The most common mistake is listing the games in order (1 v 8, 2 v 7, 3 v 6, 4 v 5) straight down the bracket. That puts seeds 1 and 2 in the same half, so they meet in the semifinal instead of the final. Use the template's order.

Where the seeds come from

  1. Pool play. Fairest at a weekend event. Two pools of four, then the top teams into this bracket. Common crossover: A1 v B2 and B1 v A2 when only the top two per pool advance.
  2. Last season's standings if the teams played in the same league.
  3. An official ranking or tier, where your sport publishes one.
  4. A public random draw if you have no results at all.

Fewer than 8 teams: byes

With 5, 6 or 7 teams, use the 8-team bracket and give byes to the top seeds. A bye is a free pass to the semifinal.

How long does an 8-team bracket take?

Seven games in three rounds. How long that takes depends on your fields and slot length (game time plus a changeover).

Sample 8-team schedule with 2 fields and 75-minute slots, one slot of rest between each team's games.
SlotTimeField 1Field 2
19:00G1: 1 v 8G2: 4 v 5

412:45G6: W3 v W4—
514:00Rest / buffer for delays—
615:15G7: FinalG8: third place (optional)

That's a day from 9:00 to about 16:15, with every team getting at least one slot of rest between games. With four fields, all quarterfinals can run at 9:00 and you finish sooner. Game counts for every format are in how many games in a tournament.

Want more games per team?

In single elimination, four of your eight teams play only once. That's hard on families who travelled. Options:

  • Consolation bracket: the four quarterfinal losers play their own mini-bracket (3 more games). Every team gets at least two games.
  • Pool play first: two pools of four (12 games), then semifinals and a final: 15 games, at least 3 per team. See the 8-team round robin template.
  • Double elimination: 14 or 15 games, at least 2 per team. See single vs double elimination.

Canadian and US notes

If your 8-team event is a sanctioned youth tournament in Canada, your provincial governing body's rules on seeding, tiebreakers and game length may apply. In Ontario soccer, tournaments go through Ontario Soccer's CTMS (Tournament Directory); in hockey, check your branch, for example Hockey Eastern Ontario. In the US, check your state association. Many 8-team brackets you'll see online in spring are for college basketball pools; the same layout works for any sport.
