A basketball team week that runs smoothly

0:00 By the end of this video, you will have a simple weekly rhythm for a youth basketball team. You will know who is coming, who plays when, and how families hear about a change. We will cover gym time, availability, fair playing time, team talk and game changes. Then we will show how Play 2 Earn Sports helps.

What makes a basketball team different

0:22 Basketball teams run on borrowed gym time. Practice slots are short, and the gym is often shared with other teams. Rosters are small, so one missing player changes the plan. Only five players are on the court at once. Arrive with a written plan, and share the gym address and door with families before the first practice.

How do I plan a basketball practice?

0:42 Here is a typical example. It is illustrative, not a specific league. A ninety-minute gym slot splits into five blocks. Ten minutes of warm-up and twenty-five of skills.

0:53 Then twenty of team offense and defense, twenty-five of scrimmage, and ten to wrap up. That adds up to ninety.

Who is coming? Ask early

0:59 Ask for availability early, ideally two days before each practice and game. Three answers work well: going, maybe and not going. A maybe tells you who to check with. Here is a typical example.

1:13 It is illustrative, not a specific league. Ten players are on the roster. Seven say going, two say maybe, and one is not going. Seven players means five on the court and two on the bench.

How do I give fair playing time?

1:26 Fair playing time starts with simple arithmetic. A game of four eight-minute quarters is thirty-two minutes. Five players on the court for thirty-two minutes is one hundred sixty player-minutes. Check your league's rulebook for your game length.

1:40 With all ten players there, one hundred sixty divided by ten is sixteen minutes each. That is two full quarters per player. With seven players, each plays about twenty-three minutes, so plan the rotation before tip-off. Write the rotation down before the game.

1:57 Explain your playing-time approach to parents at the start of the season. When families know the plan, game days feel calmer.

Keep team talk in one place

2:05 Keep team talk in one place, with the right people in each conversation. Players need practice details. Coaches need a quiet space to plan. Parents need times, locations and rides.

2:17 Separate spaces keep each message where it belongs. Gym times move often. A school event can take the court, or a game can shift by an hour. When that happens, change the time in one place, then let families know straight away.

2:32 Game days need helpers too. Ask parents to cover the scorekeeper's table, the clock and the snack table. For away games, a simple carpool plan saves many messages.

How Play 2 Earn Sports helps

2:43 Now, how Play 2 Earn Sports helps a basketball team. The team and club calendar shows games, practices and events on web and phone. Players and parents answer Going, Maybe or Can't go, and coaches see counts and names. A coach can send one manual in-app reminder per item, at most once every twenty-four hours.

3:05 Coaches and club admins use the same lineup builder, and basketball gets a court view for the lineup. Coaches and club staff mark attendance as present, late, absent or excused, separately from RSVPs. Teams can keep player stats too. Each team has Team, Coaches and Parents channels.

3:24 Players, coaches and chat-enabled staff post in Team, and guardians can read their child's Team channel. A private adult-to-minor chat brings a parent or guardian into the conversation until the player turns eighteen. When a team event, team game or club game changes, affected families get in-app, email and push notices. These are on by default, and families can opt out of event email and push. The app installs from the website on iPhone and Android.

Start with your team

3:52 Coaching one team on your own? Start a free club account for your team, then add your team and your players. Every organization feature is on every plan. Plan the gym time, ask early, share playing time fairly, and keep team talk in one place.

4:09 The full guide is on the page linked in the description. Try it with your own team: Starter is free for clubs with up to 10 teams. Thanks for watching.

What makes running a basketball team different

  1. Borrowed gym time. Most youth teams practise in a school or community gym for a fixed slot, often shared with another team on the other half of the court.
  2. Small rosters. A team of eight to twelve players feels every absence. With five on the court, two missing players can leave you with no bench.
  3. Short, busy game days. Someone has to run the scorer's table and the clock, and the gym often turns over to the next game quickly.
  4. Playing time is visible. Parents can count minutes from the bleachers, so a clear, shared approach matters.
  5. Frequent gym changes. A school event or a facility booking can move a practice with little notice.

Step 1

Plan the practice to the gym slot

Write the plan before you arrive and fit it to the minutes you really hold, including getting balls out and the court cleared for the next group.

Illustrative example, not a specific league.

Step 1 — plan the practice to the gym slot
BlockMinutesWhat happens
Warm-up 10 Dynamic movement, ball handling
Skills 25 Shooting form, passing, footwork
Team offense and defense 20 One set, one defensive rule
Scrimmage 25 Apply the day's focus
Wrap-up 10 Notes, next game, balls away
Total 90 Fits a 90-minute gym slot

If your slot is 60 minutes, keep the same order and shorten each block. Share the gym address and the entrance door with families before the first practice.

Step 2

Ask who is coming, early

Ask for availability two days before each practice and game, with three answers: going, maybe and not going. A "maybe" is useful: it tells you exactly who to check with.

Illustrative example, not a specific league. Ten players on the roster: seven say going, two say maybe, one is not going (7 + 2 + 1 = 10). Seven players means five on the court and two on the bench. If both maybes turn into "not going", you still have five, and you know before game day.

Step 3

Work out fair playing time with simple arithmetic

Player-minutes make playing time easy to plan and easy to explain.

Illustrative example, not a specific league. Check your league's rulebook for game length and any minimum-playing-time rule.

Step 3 — work out fair playing time with simple arithmetic
GamePlayers on courtGame minutesPlayer-minutesPlayers presentMinutes each
Four 8-minute quarters 5 32 5 × 32 = 160 10 160 ÷ 10 = 16 (two quarters each)
Same game 5 32 160 7 160 ÷ 7 ≈ 23

Write the rotation before tip-off, and explain your playing-time approach to parents at a preseason meeting. Many coaches also ask families to wait until the next day before raising playing time, so conversations stay calm.

Step 4

Keep team talk in one place, with the right people

Personal group chats mix players, parents and coaches in one stream. Give each group its own space instead:

  1. Players need practice details and the plan for the week.
  2. Coaches need a quiet space to plan lineups and practices.
  3. Parents need times, locations and rides.

Agree on simple ground rules too: what goes in which conversation, and quiet hours for messages.

Step 5

Gym changes, helpers and carpools

  1. When a gym time changes, change it in one place and tell families straight away, rather than sending three corrections in three places.
  2. Game-day helpers. Ask parents ahead of time to cover the scorer's table, the clock and the snack table.
  3. Away games. A simple carpool plan saves many messages on game morning.

Checklist: a basketball team's week

  1. Gym slot, address and entrance shared before the first practice.
  2. Practice plan adds up to the minutes you hold.
  3. Availability asked two days ahead of each practice and game.
  4. Rotation written before tip-off, using player-minutes.
  5. Playing-time approach explained to parents before the season.
  6. Players, coaches and parents each in their own conversation.
  7. Scorer's table, clock and snack table covered.
  8. Carpools sorted for away games.

How Play 2 Earn Sports supports a basketball team

Play 2 Earn Sports is one team app for the whole team, built into the same club management software clubs use for every team.

  • One calendar

The team and club calendar shows games, practices and events on web and phone. Practices can be created with a location, and repeating practices are set up through the club's event tools.

  • Who is coming

Players and parents answer Going, Maybe or Can't go, and coaches see counts and names. A coach can send one manual in-app reminder per item, at most once every 24 hours. Today, a follow-up after that is your team's process.

  • Lineups

Coaches and club admins use the same lineup builder, and basketball gets a court view for the lineup. Today, the minutes rotation in Step 3 is your team's plan on paper.

  • Attendance

Coaches and club staff mark attendance as present, late, absent or excused, separately from RSVPs, so you can see who said yes and who came.

  • Stats

Teams can keep player stats. Staff entries publish right away; player-entered stats publish after two teammate confirmations.

  • Team chat

Each team has Team, Coaches and Parents channels. Players, coaches and chat-enabled staff post in Team; coaches post in Coaches; coaches and guardians post in Parents. Guardians can read their child's Team channel but not post there. Club admins can audit read-only.

  • Safe-sport design

A private adult-to-minor chat brings a parent or guardian into the conversation until the player turns 18. Players under 14 can only DM teammates. Messages can be reported or blocked.

  • When a game moves

When a team event, team game or club game changes, affected families get in-app, email and push notices by default, and can opt out of event email and push.

  • Helpers and rides

Clubs post volunteer jobs for events, such as scorekeeper or snack table, and team volunteers can take them. Event carpools let drivers offer seats and riders request a ride.

  • On the phone

The app installs from the website on iPhone and Android, not from the app stores. Tap Turn on notifications to get notices on the phone; on iPhone, add it to the Home Screen first. Live data needs a connection.
