A hockey week that runs on time
0:00 By the end of this video, you will have a simple weekly routine for a hockey team. Ice times, who is coming, fair lines and family messages, in one place. We will cover what makes hockey different, a weekly routine, one worked weekend, and how Play 2 Earn Sports helps.
What makes a hockey team different
0:18 Hockey runs on booked ice. Ice times move between early mornings and late evenings, often at different rinks. So each event needs the rink and an arrival time. A coach plans around positions, not just a head count.
0:33 You need goalies, defence pairs and forward lines. One missing goalie changes the plan, so early answers matter.
How do I organize a hockey team each week?
0:41 On Monday, check that the week is on the team calendar. By Wednesday, see who has answered. On Thursday, send one reminder. On Friday, set your lines.
0:52 Put the arrival time in every event. Many teams ask players to arrive thirty minutes before the ice, to dress and warm up. Check your rink's dressing-room times.
Setting fair lines
1:03 Fair lines are a coaching choice, and a written rule helps. Many youth coaches roll lines evenly and rotate which line starts each period. Write a simple goalie rota before the season.
A worked example: one hockey weekend
1:15 Here is a typical example. It is illustrative, not a specific club. A youth team has seventeen players: two goalies, six defence and nine forwards. Saturday's game is at seven fifteen in the morning.
1:28 Players arrive at six forty-five. By Wednesday, thirteen are going and two are maybes. One is out, and one has not answered. That is seventeen.
1:38 The coach sees the names: both maybes are forwards, and the missing answer is a defenceman. On Thursday, the coach sends one reminder. By Friday, one maybe is going, the other is out, and the defenceman says going. That is fifteen dressed: two goalies, six defence and seven forwards.
1:57 Six defence make three pairs. Seven forwards make two full lines, with one forward rotating in to keep shifts even. One goalie starts this game, and the other starts the next.
When the ice time changes
2:08 On Friday night, the rink moves the game from seven fifteen to eight thirty. Change that one event, not the whole schedule. Move the arrival to eight o'clock as well. After the game, the coach marks attendance.
2:21 Fourteen were present, one was late, and the two who were out are excused. That is seventeen again, kept separate from the week's answers.
How Play 2 Earn Sports helps
2:29 Now, how Play 2 Earn Sports helps. The team and club calendar shows games, practices and events on web and phone. Players and parents answer Going, Maybe or Can't go, and coaches see counts and names. A coach can send one manual in-app reminder per item, at most once every twenty-four hours.
2:47 Coaches and club admins use the same lineup builder, with a squad and rink view. Coaches and club staff mark attendance as present, late, absent or excused. Teams can keep player stats. Staff entries publish right away, and player entries after two teammate confirmations.
3:05 Each team has Team, Coaches and Parents channels. Guardians can read their child's Team channel and post in Parents. A private adult-to-minor chat brings in a parent or guardian until the player turns eighteen. Players under fourteen can only message teammates directly.
3:23 When a team event or game changes, affected families get in-app, email and push notices by default, and can opt out of event email and push. Event carpools let drivers offer seats and riders request a ride. Clubs post volunteer jobs, such as scorekeeper, for team volunteers to take. The app installs from the website on iPhone and Android.
3:45 Tap Turn on notifications on your phone; on iPhone, add it to the Home Screen first. Live data needs a connection, so check the week's times before you leave home. Coaching one team? Start a free club account for your team at club starter.
3:59 Coaches can join their club through the coach sign-up, and the club approves them. Today, repeating practices are set up through the club's event tools. Post the week, check who is coming, set fair lines, and change one event at a time. The full guide is on the page linked in the description.
4:16 Try it with your own ice times: Starter is free for clubs with up to 10 teams. Thanks for watching.
What makes a hockey team different
- Ice is booked, and it moves. A team may skate at six in the morning on Saturday and nine at night on Tuesday, at two different rinks. The calendar has to carry the rink with every event.
- Arrival time is not ice time. Players dress in full gear before the ice opens. Many teams ask players to arrive about thirty minutes early. Put the arrival time in every event, and check your rink's dressing-room times.
- Positions, not just a head count. A coach plans goalies, defence pairs and forward lines. One missing goalie changes the whole plan, so early answers matter more than in many sports.
- Early ice means early driving. Carpools help families with a six o'clock start, especially when the rink is a long drive away.
- Signal at the rink can be weak. Check the week's times before you leave home.
How do I organize a hockey team each week?
A simple routine keeps the week calm for the coach and the families.
- Monday: post the week. Make sure every game and practice for the week is on the team calendar, each with the rink, the ice time and the arrival time.
- Wednesday: check answers. Look at who is going, who is a maybe and who has not answered. Look by position: goalies first, then defence, then forwards.
- Thursday: one reminder. Send one reminder to anyone who has not answered. One clear nudge works better than several.
- Friday: set your lines. Build the lines from the players who are going, and tell the goalies who starts.
- After the game: mark attendance. Record who was present, late, absent or excused. Keep it separate from the week's answers, because plans change on the day.
Setting fair lines
Fair lines are a coaching choice. A short written rule, shared with families before the season, saves many conversations later.
- Roll lines evenly. Many youth coaches give every line similar ice time and rotate which line starts each period.
- Plan for odd numbers. With seven forwards, run two full lines and rotate the seventh forward in, so nobody sits for long.
- Write the goalie rota. If you have two goalies, alternate starts game by game, and write the order down before the season.
- Check your association's rules. Some associations set rules for playing time or goalie use at younger ages.
Worked example
One hockey weekend
Illustrative example, not a specific club.
A youth team has seventeen players: two goalies, six defence and nine forwards. Saturday's game is at 7:15 a.m., and players arrive at 6:45 a.m.
Wednesday: the answers so far.
| Answer | Players | Who |
|---|---|---|
| Going | 13 | 2 goalies, 5 defence, 6 forwards |
| Maybe | 2 | 2 forwards |
| Out for the weekend | 1 | 1 forward |
| No answer yet | 1 | 1 defence |
| Total | 17 | 2 goalies, 6 defence, 9 forwards |
Thursday: one reminder. By Friday, one maybe is going and the other is out. The defence player answers going.
Friday: who dresses. 13 + 1 + 1 = 15 players: 2 goalies, 6 defence and 7 forwards.
Friday: the lines.
Six defence make three pairs.
Seven forwards make two full lines, with one forward rotating in, so shifts stay even.
One goalie starts this game; the other starts the next, as the rota says.
Friday night: the ice time changes. The rink moves the game from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. The coach changes that one event, not the whole schedule, and moves the arrival time with it, to 8:00 a.m. Then the drivers are asked to confirm.
After the game: attendance.
| Status | Players |
|---|---|
| Present | 14 |
| Late | 1 |
| Excused (the two who were out) | 2 |
| Total | 17 |
Fourteen present plus one late is the fifteen who dressed.

How Play 2 Earn Sports supports a hockey team
Play 2 Earn Sports is the team app for the whole team, inside the same club management software your club can use for every team.
-
One calendar
The team and club calendar shows games, practices and events on web and phone. Practices can be created with a location, so the rink travels with the event. Today, repeating practices are set up through the club's event tools.
-
Who is coming
Players and parents answer Going, Maybe or Can't go, and coaches see counts and names. A coach can send one manual in-app reminder per item, at most once every 24 hours. Today, that one manual reminder is your team's process; there are no automatic reminders.
-
Lineups
Coaches and club admins use the same lineup builder. Hockey gets a squad view and a view of the rink surface.
-
Attendance
Coaches and club staff mark attendance as present, late, absent or excused, separately from RSVPs.
-
Stats
Teams can keep player stats. Staff entries publish right away; player-entered stats publish after two teammate confirmations.
-
Team chat with safe-sport rules
Each team has Team, Coaches and Parents channels. Players, coaches and chat-enabled staff post in Team; coaches post in Coaches; coaches and guardians post in Parents. Guardians can read their child's Team channel but not post there. A private adult-to-minor chat brings a parent or guardian into the conversation until the player turns 18. Players under 14 can only DM teammates. Messages can be reported or blocked. Club admins can audit read-only.
-
Photos and voice notes
Team chat supports photos, short video, GIFs and voice notes, stored privately. Today, there is no team photo album; staff can send documents to team members.
-
When the ice time changes
When a team event, team game or club game changes, affected families get in-app, email and push notices by default, and can opt out of event email and push.
-
Carpools and volunteers
Event carpools let drivers offer seats and riders request a ride. Clubs post volunteer jobs for events, such as scorekeeper, and team volunteers can take them.
-
Rosters and families
Club staff add players to a team and invite players by email; linked guardians and one guardian with several children are supported. One parent account switches between several children on different teams.
-
On the phone
The app installs from the website on iPhone and Android, not from the app stores. Tap Turn on notifications to get notices on the phone; on iPhone, add it to the Home Screen first. Live data needs a connection.
-
Calendars
Families can add a single event to Google or Apple Calendar with an .ics link. Today, there is no whole-team calendar subscription feed.
Coaches can join their club through the coach sign-up, and the club approves them. Coaching one team on your own? Start a free club account for your team at /club-starter.
